I won’t go into all the different brands here or try to compare every single one on the market - because 1) that’d be super overwhelming for both of us and 2) if you’re really curious, you can Google chalk paint comparisons and come up with plenty of reading material on the topic. You’ve probably heard of popular brands like Annie Sloan (the OG of chalk paint, if you will) and Amy Howard, although this post cataloged at least 26 different varieties of chalk paint. How many different kinds of chalk paint are there? This, you guys, is my #1 reason for loving chalk paint.

A DIY’er of ANY skill level can use chalk paint and get a pretty solid result.

Some people claim that painting with chalk paint doesn’t require priming or sanding, although I call BS on that…but we’ll save that for a different post.

Chalk paint sometimes requires less prep work than if you’re using other types of paints.

(Shabby chic isn’t really my thing so I’ve never distressed any furniture using chalk paint, but supposedly it’s a fairly easy process.)

It’s easy to achieve a distressed, antique look on furniture pieces.

The finish is super matte and looks chalky - no sheen here, folks.

Well I hope you enjoyed my little review and comparison of the Behr chalk paint and the Rust-Oleum chalk paint. However, if you want a custom color, I think the Behr chalk paint is definitely the way to go. I think either one of these chalk paints make a great option, but I lean a little more towards Rust-Oleum just because it gives more coverage.That options isn’t really available with the Rust-Oleum chalk paint–they recommend only mixing it with other chalk paint to make a custom color. There’s a dark base and a white base, which is what I used for today’s comparison, but you can tint the paint using any color you like. The cool thing about the Behr chalk paint is that it’s easily tintable to match almost any Behr color.The biggest difference I noticed was in the coverage–Rust-Oleum offers more coverage per coat of paint and it was less streaky than the Behr paint.Both applied easily and adhered well to the cabinet with no prep whatsoever and no primer. Both dried to a matte finish, but the Behr side was a bit smoother to the touch.Īfter the paint was fully dried I added a little distressing to both sides with sandpaper.Both applied easily on the second coat and there was no buildup.The Rust-Oleum paint seemed more pigmented.It definitely needs a third coat of paint. You can see in the side by side comparison–the left side (Behr) is more streaky.After finishing the second coat it was obvious the Behr chalk paint didn’t give as much coverage as the Rust-Oleum chalk paint.Thoughts after the 2nd coat of both chalk paints: They also both dried quickly as well–I’d say both sides were dry within 15 minutes.Both paints went on easily and application was a breeze.The Rust-Oleum chalk paint offered more coverage after one coat of paint.Right away I noticed the Behr paint was a little thicker in consistency, but it went on streaky.Thoughts after the 1st coat of both chalk paints: Here’s how the cabinet looked after the first coat of paint: Then I painted one half with the Behr chalk paint and one half with the Rust-Oleum chalk paint. For this comparison I did nothing to prep the cabinet other than clean it up and remove dust.
